Monthly Meetings

HWNL hold monthly meetings at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead. Both members and non-members are welcome to attend. The talks are very relaxed and informal with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share your own experiences.

Next Meeting: Sex & Sexuality, 16 July

This month we welcome Michelle Crawley to talk to us about sex and sexuality after brain injury. Michelle works as an occupational therapist at the neurological rehabilitation unit in Willesden, working predominantly with people who have had a brain injury as a result of strokes, traumatic injury or infections.
Michelle's talk is an adaptation of a workshop run by Headway UK and recently presented at Headway North West London. The presentation is designed to encourage us to think about the effect an injury to the brain could have on a person's sexuality and their behaviours, and the effect this has on partners, family and carers. Michelle will also provide some useful contacts for further information.
This is an important subject that impacts many people after a brain injury. As usual all are welcome so we look forward to seeing you there.

Date: Wednesday 16 July 2008
Time: 7.00pm - 9.00pm (please be on time, refreshments served)
Place: The Marsden Room, Royal Free Hospital, Pond Street, Hampstead

Previous Monthly Meetings

September 2007

September's guest speaker was Bonnie-Kate Dewar, Research Clinical Neuro-psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, whose talk was about managing cognitive changes following an Acquired Brain Injury. A brain injury can result in unexpected and sometimes complex changes to cognitive (and emotional) responses. Bonnie's talk was a very interesting discussion about some of these changes and some practical strategies for managing them.

July 2007
July's guest speaker was Michael Pressinger a trained psychologist who gave a fantastic talk about Social Interaction after a brain injury. His talk included discussion of key relationships and social friendships and the way these can be affected by brain injury.

April 2007
April's guest speaker was Ros Lewis-Williams, an Art Psychotherapist from an organisation called 'Art in Community'. Ros ran a six-week Art therapy program for Headway North London. The monthly talk was an opportunity to learn about the nature of Art Psychotherapy and the emotional and psychological impacts of art making. Creativity is considered a good way to maintain or improve mental health and this talk was a chance to find out more about the Art therapy class.
